Neither a strictly documentary photograph or a montage/illustration this card is one of Fred's finest depictions of a Bristol fire. Its success is due to the clever use of chemical bleaching in the buildings windows and the over exaggerated artistic flames. The fire at a printing works and warehouse on Colston Avenue drew crowds of 30,000 people. Contemporary accounts described it as a "brilliant spectacle" with many staying through the night fascinated by the dreadful crashes and and rumbling roar as heavy machinery fell through the buildings floors.
