This was one of a series of photographs that Fred issued documenting the destruction of this fine medieval gateway in Tower Lane. During the exposure a child ran into the cameras view and the ghostly image of the boy can be seen in the bottom left of the image. The photograph is very well arranged with the distant figures in the alley providing depth and a sense of scale, the wheelbarrow at the front leads the viewer into the composition. In its final hours the arch still dominates its surroundings and is even majestic in its destruction.
St Johns Arch, Bristol. Destroyed Mar 17th 1911.
